Robert A. Papper is a professor in the telecom-
munications department and head of the broadcast
news sequence at Ball State University. A graduate
of Columbia College and the Columbia Graduate
School of Journalism, he worked as a producer,
writer, and manager at television stations in Min-
neapolis (WCCO-TV), Washington, D.C. (WRC-
TV), San Francisco (KPIX-TV), and Columbus,
Ohio (WSYX-TV), and currently serves as research
coordinator for the Center for Media Design’s Local
News Project. He is a former chair of journalism
at Ohio Wesleyan University and former broadcast
news program director at The American University
in Washington, D.C.
He is the author of Broadcast News Writing Style-
book and has won more than 100 state, regional, and national awards, including 10
regional Edward R. Murrow Awards (most recently in 2003) and a DuPont-Columbia
216 award for “Outstanding Contributions to Television.”
He is a past president of the Maine Association of Broadcasters and a long-time
member of the national education committee and task force of the Radio Television
News Directors Association. He has overseen the annual research for RTNDA for the
last 11 years. He serves as associate editor of The International Digital Media & Arts
Association Journal and editor of Electronic News: A Journal of Applied Research & Ideas.
Thomas A. Price is an assistant professor of photo-
journalism at Ball State University and has served
as the photojournalism sequence coordinator since
1997. During his time at Ball State, the photojour-
nalism program has become recognized as one of the
top programs in the country.
Price received a bachelor’s degree in English from
the University of South Carolina and a master’s
degree in communication photography from Syra-
cuse University. During a 21-year career at The
News-Press in Fort Myers, Florida, as photogra-
pher, picture editor, and director of photography,
he was recognized by the Robert Kennedy Journal-
ism Awards (grand prize and first prize, print), the
National Headliners Awards, Best of Gannett, Asso-
ciated Press Managing Editors, National Press Photographers Association, Florida
Society of Newspaper Editors, and the Florida Press Club among others. He is listed
in Who’s Who in America and International Who’s Who of Information Technology.
