About the Authors



                         His work has been published in more than 40 international, national, and regional
                      publications. He also conducts research in the areas of new media and readers’ reactions
                      to photographs and design.


                                                Robert S. Pritchard, APR, Fellow PRSA, Captain,
                                                U.S. Navy (retired), is an assistant professor of pub-
                                                lic relations and serves as the faculty adviser for the
                                                Public Relations Student Society of America chapter
                                                and for Cardinal Communications, the university’s
                                                student-run public relations agency.
                                                   Pritchard completed his 27-year naval career as
                                                the director of public relations for the U.S. European
                                                Command in Stuttgart, Germany, his third consec-
                                                utive Unified Command public relations position. In
                                                the span of those three assignments, he managed all
                                                U.S. military public relations activity in 73 countries,
                                                territories, and possessions in the Pacific; 91 coun-
                                                tries in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East; and for
                                                the nation’s strategic forces. Throughout his career
                      as a navy public affairs officer, he was responsible for designing, writing, and pro-
                      ducing the full spectrum of publications including daily newspapers, award-winning  217
                      magazines, and countless collateral and promotional pieces.
                         He received a bachelor’s degree from Phillips University in business administration
                      and a master’s degree in public relations from Ball State. His research interests include
                      crisis management communications, issues management, management counseling, and
                      professional development.


                                                Stephen Quinn is an associate professor of journal-
                                                ism in the Faculty of Arts at Deankin University in
                                                Australia. He previously served as an associate pro-
                                                fessor of journalism at Ball State University and as
                                                both the director of the Center for Media Training
                                                and Research and an associate professor of journal-
                                                ism at Zayed University in Dubai in the United Arab
                                                Emirates. He has also taught journalism in the United
                                                Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
                                                   Between 1975 and 1990, Quinn worked full time
                                                as a reporter, writer, editor, and columnist in Aus-
                                                tralia, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and New
                                                Zealand. He started with regional newspapers in
                                                Australia (the Newcastle Herald ) and has worked—in
                                                chronological order—for the Bangkok Post, the Press
                      Association in London, BBC-TV, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Televi-
                      sion New Zealand, Independent Television News in London, and The Guardian in
                      London.
