Tips for Success
Try to brainstorm the various types of questions that may be presented to the DG team. Remember,
most reviewers will go immediately into forming mental organization charts. It is very easy to pick the
model apart if that is allowed to happen.
Be careful when presenting the results of this activity to leadership. Very often too much detail is
presented. You may want to focus on a version of the V along with a list of functions by DG and IM.
Hopefully, the details will be left to the DG team.
SUMMARY
At some point, data governance needs to make the transition from a cool concept to an operational
model. This phase conducts the first half of that transition. It is the step where the realities of data
governance start to run into the realities of organizations realizing the need to approach information
differently.
As a result, some engineering is required. Relevant principles of information management are
defined. The principles form a foundation for belief that is critical. They also provide implications and
rationale, which then frames policy development. Then the required functions for plan, design,
manage, and operate DG can be defined. We are not done yet, though. We still need to identify “who”
and determine “where” the data governance happens. However, we do have a firm grasp of the “what.”
From the principles to the detailed processes, you need to complete this activity with a good under-
standing of an operational model and a clear presentation of data governance for your enterprise.
