information areas. Often, the initial DG staff are told to “fit it in” to their current roles and respon-

sibilities. It is challenging to these individuals to maintain the separation of duties mandated by the V,
while also creating embedded organizational processes, new roles, and a sustainable program.
Remember, you must identify the IM functions as well as the DG functions.
Activity: Identify/Refine IM Functions and Processes

This is a short activity to identify the IM functions. During this activity, the team collects and identifies
processes that are for the information-management area. This is done to make a clear distinction
between the governed and the governors. Business areas do not have a difficult time understanding
they are subject to oversight. Business leaders often interact with all kinds of compliance require-
ments. But Information technology (IT) staff, as well as information managers of an organization,
occasionally have difficulty seeing the distinction. The prior activity added details to the left part of the
             V. This activity adds details to the right side.

Kudos to those IM staff we have worked with over the years that, to a person, have all had to do double duty. There are
many hardworking people in information management, and we have never seen a management team allow the designated
DG deployment team to offload their current duties. Of course, it drags things out, but they hang in there. As for the
management who demands the double duty (and does not offer additional incentive) while at the same time saying how
important DG is, well, we will refrain from comment here.
