FIGURE 10-7
Sample Principles.
Have a few people write some of the principles while another group writes the others. Then have them
exchange and critique.
The first pass will result in many principles that should be policy. It is not uncommon to feel you
need 20 principles, but this is akin to saying there are 20 commandments or 200 rights in the Bill of
Rightsdyou dilute the power of the philosophy and belief. Figure 10-7 represents final list. The
original worksheet of principles was actually too large to include in the book!
Occasionally approval of principles becomes an issuedexecutives feel that there are too many
principles and policies. Even if it takes a while to get the principles approved, do not stop. You can
continue working on other activities in this phase. The principles affect ideas, beliefs, and behavior.
You can continue to work on the “nuts and bolts.”
Activity: Determine Baseline DG Processes to Support Business
Every process has a step where the ideas, concepts, and philosophy must become real and tangible.
This activity is that step for data governance. The mission and vision of DG, along with the principles
and business drivers, converge to identify the policies that codify data governance as well as the actual
processes that will be required for a functional DG program.
