Granted, now and then you’ll find yourself in a sensitive
situation where it makes sense to let others make the first
move. Tact and good judgment may say to you, “Give the
other person some space. Let the situation develop fur-
ther, so you can make sure you behave appropriately.”
Just remember, when you allow others to own the action
part of the behavior cycle, you’ll be under their influence
as you react.
So form the habit of deciding fast and choosing to act. Make
the opening move and you gain the edge, which brings you
to the next decision.
DECISION 2:
DO I WANT TO BE POSITIVE, NEGATIVE,
OR NEUTRAL?
This second decision is a bullet you can’t dodge. Regardless
of whether you end up in the action or reaction part of the
