LAYER STYLE TECHNIQUES 167
TIP I recommend checking Zoom Resizes Windows under Edit Preferences General. The size of
the document window that you can fit on your screen without the scroll bars appearing depends
on the resolution setting of your graphics card.
Filling an enclosed area is also the first step in preparing to use layer style effects. Let’s fill the
walls and island with black to make them stand out. Technically, you don’t have to fill with
black; any color will do, including white. You control where the layer style effects appear
based on the placement of pixels on the layer to which they are bound. Layers styles do not
appear in transparent areas (where there are no pixels).
3. In the Layers palette, select the Kitchen-A-wall layer. Select the Paint Bucket tool in the tool-
box, and select Foreground from the Fill drop-down on the Options bar. Press D to set the
default colors so that black is in the foreground. Click inside each one of the walls with the tip
of the Paint Bucket cursor to fill them in with black, as shown in Figure 5.31.
TIP You might find selecting easier with the precise cursor. Press Caps Lock to toggle into Precise
Cursor mode featuring the crosshair cursor. You can press Caps Lock again to toggle out of the mode.
Each tool once again has its own characteristic cursor icon.
4. Select the Kitchen-A-mlwk-ilnd (meaning “architectural-millwork-island”) layer. Using the
Paint Bucket, click inside the island to fill it with black.
Applying Layer Styles
You can apply multiple effects within the Layer Style dialog box in a series of steps. The following
steps overlay a grayscale pattern and scale it down to suit the size of the kitchen island.
1. With the Kitchen-A-mlwk-ilnd layer still selected, click the Add A Layer Style button (at the
bottom of the Layers palette) and select Pattern Overlay from the menu. In the Layer Style dia-
log box, open the Pattern Picker and click the triangle button. Select the Texture Fill library
from the menu (see Figure 5.32). Click OK when the small warning dialog box appears.
