The Accelerated Job Search
Phase 4. The employment opening is announced to the general
public via various media such as newspapers, the Internet, the radio,
or trade journals. Experts estimate that at this phase your competi-
tion skyrockets to as many as 10,000 or more potential job applicants.
The Unadvertised Job Market
Remember, no one in the general public has yet to hear of the new
posting until it reaches phase 4 of the hiring cycle. Because phases 1
through 3 are “hidden” from the outside world, they are also some-
times referred to as the hidden job market or the unadvertised job market.
The unadvertised job market is your window
of opportunity.
If you were somehow to hear of a potential opening at phase 2
or 3, you would have only a handful of other people competing for
the opening.
If you had a way to directly reach the decision maker in phase
1 when it was first conceived, you would not have any competition.
That’s it. Zero!
Beating the Job Search Statistics
Let’s take a look at what happens if you wait to see the opening in
the classifieds of your local newspaper. As mentioned before, as
many as 10,000 other people may see that ad, take interest in it, and
become your competition. The numbers go up astronomically
when you think about the millions of people around the world who
have access to a job opening when it’s advertised on the Internet!
This is not to say that you should never open a newspaper again
if you’re looking for a job. Newspapers, networking, and the
Internet are still viable means to get a job. Used along with direct-
contact techniques aimed at the unadvertised job market, they are
an important part of the job search. Just make sure that you don’t
spend too much of your valuable time focused on advertisements.
