The Accelerated Job Search

someone today, but when the project starts or the prod-
uct is being manufactured and marketed, employees,
managers, and sales teams will be needed to support
                     those efforts.
                   • Use the Internet. One of my favorite sites for business
information is www.hoovers.com. You can enter the name
of several companies in the specialized Hoover’s search
engine and compare their one-year employee growth
rates. At least relatively, you could determine lesser and
better chances of openings arising in the near future. A
5.6 percent employee growth rate versus a rate of 21.7 per-
cent can be found in two companies in the same industry
that are practically next door to each other. Ironically, the
company that seems more famous and successful may have
a much lower growth rate than a lesser-known company.
Hoover’s also contains current news with clues about
company expansion and implosion. You can find releases
(things the company writes about itself, versus news, which
is written by journalists and reporters). New-product
releases and project initiations are often announced well
ahead of the point that a company would normally hire
people to staff these new ventures. Geographic data as well
as companies’ intentions to create new locations or new
offices and factories are also reported in press releases.
The classified ads in newspapers and on the Internet don’t
reflect these changes because they haven’t happened yet.
Again, if you uncover these clues, you’ll be the first there
with little or no competition for upcoming positions.
                   • Another useful site is vcbuzz.com. This site issues reports
when start-up companies receive large infusions of ven-
ture capital (funding). Guess what happens after fund-
                     ing? You guessed it: hiring!

Advertised or unadvertised, you are most likely going to need a
résumé to make your career transition and job search successful.
There are three basic types of résumés: chronological, functional, and
hybrid, which is a combination of the first two.
