The Career Change Question
As a career changer you will most definitely be asked the following
question during your interview: Why did you quit your former career?
The most favorable answer to this question is one that is not
negative and does not reflect badly on you. An answer that indicates
you were bored, “burned out,” hated your old profession, had trou-
ble with your boss or coworkers, were fired, or that you are seeking
out a new career “just for the money” may sound negative or even
petty to the interviewer.
Better answers to this question would be the following:
1. My last career was not a perfect match for my interests and
skills. After researching this (the new) profession, I think
I’m very well matched and would be very happy to be part
of it.
2. I have been researching the profession of _______________
(the new career), and I find it fascinating. There are some
trends and innovations that really interest me, such as
____________, and I’d like to make a career of being a
____________________.
Notice that the better answers to this question
focus less on the old job and much more on the
new career.
