Fearless Career Change
by showing that you heard and thought about some of the items dis-
cussed at the interview.
You can also illustrate how your talents can help solve some of
the problems or meet some of the goals of the company that you
learned about during the meeting, such as tidbits about the inter-
viewer (a golfer, bowler, swimmer, tennis player, pianist, a rock and
roll fan), new product launches, new projects, company mile-
stones, the interviewer’s career path to management, same alma
mater, anything else in common? Whatever indicates that you were
an attentive listener can be important to allude to in the focus let-
ter. Additionally, you can tactfully add anything valuable about
yourself that you might have forgotten at the interview. (See the
sample letter below.)

Ms. Bettina Simmons
Executive Vice President
Ionit, Incorporated
1
554 ⁄2 Second Avenue, Suite 237A
New York, NY 103xx
Dear Ms. Simmons:
What a pleasure it was to meet you earlier today! I must
say I was very flattered that you extended our meeting
from the half-hour we had planned to almost 90 min-
utes. I certainly appreciate your generosity in sharing
your ideas about the company and acquainting me
with Bob Delts and the others on the team.
Something in our exchange rang a bell for me, and I just
thought I’d share it with you. You mentioned that Ionit
would be opening an office soon in Minneapolis and that
a senior vice president would be needed there for a time
to get the January product launch off to a roaring start.
