100% Accountability: A New Canvas on Which to Paint the Future 275

We must think and behave differently so we can discover new
ways to forge our relationship with our customers.”
               2. Tap the inherent desire and capacity of people to learn and
grow. For example: “I want each of us to learn together and
fully tap our potential. We’ll learn how to build committed
partnerships with each other and with our customers. I will be
learning right along with you. With these new skills, we will
                  accomplish our business objectives.”
               3. Invite others to make a personal choice and partner with
you. For example: “I need your partnership—I can’t do this
alone. And, I don’t want your compliance; I want your align-
ment. The power to shape our future is in your hands. Will you
join me in building committed partnerships with our customers?”
               4. Connect to a compelling business objective. For example:
“Our mission is clear—we will deliver a world-class customer
experience. We will achieve this because of your commitment
to engage with our customers in an extraordinary way.”

You do not need to be the CEO to establish a powerful context. Every
project, endeavor, and relationship requires a context. Regardless of title
or position, it is within your power to expand the context and emotionally
engage others every time you speak. It requires only a sentence or two to
reconnect people to their personal commitment and the organization’s
             larger mission.

LEARN TOGETHER AND STEP INTO GREATNESS
When people learn how to be committed partners, they discover a new
way to communicate with one another that they did not have access to
before. This is far more impactful than leaders realize. When people dis-
cover that they have the power to influence others and shape the future,
they apply new skills and behavior to all areas of their life—at work and
at home. The positive results they produce drive them to learn and
achieve more. The new behaviors become embedded because people
make a life choice to change their behavior. This crossover between work
life and personal life is powerful testimony to what people want and need:
a way to be more effective in all areas of their life. Corporate values
