TABLE 1.6 Standards for smart sensor networks—cont’d

              Standard type Short description
rates, filters, and sample rate conversions
for transient data being exchanged are
discussed. Files for data exchange are
specified, as is the organization of the
data. A sample file is given
IEEE C37.118 This standard defines synchrophasors,
Standard for synchrophasor measurements frequency, and rate of change of
for power systems frequency (ROCOF) measurement under
                                              all operating conditions. It specifies
                                              methods for evaluating these
                                              measurements and requirements for
compliance with the standard. Time tag
                                              and synchronization requirements are
included in the standards while the
                                              performance requirements are
confirmed with a reference model and
                                              provided in detail
IEEE C37.2-2008 This standard applies to the definition
Standard electrical power system device and application of function numbers and
function numbers, acronyms, and contact acronyms for devices and functions used
designations in electrical substations and generating
plants and in installations of power
                                              utilization and conversion apparatus.
These numbers and acronyms may also
be used to represent individual functions
                                              within multi-function devices or
software programs, and that may contain
                                              both protection- and non-protection-
                                              oriented functions

Standard 1159.3 to provide a recommended practice for power quality data
interchange format (PQDIF). Thus, any system can interact with any other
one regardless of vendor or data format due to unique PQDIF documents and
files generated by various platforms or PQ meters. The data acquisition and
sharing applications are performed in more efficient, accurate and reliable ways
by the arrangements of IEEE 1159.3 standard [30].
Another outstanding standard is improved to present arrangements data
communications between RTUs and IEDs in a substation that is known as IEEE
1379-2000 standards. It also targets interoperability issues such as interfacing
any equipment with other equipment and systems along the power grid. The
purpose of recommended practice is to provide further understanding on
RTU and IED communications as well as SCADA system and its central station
