Note: Level 4 of the standards does not include the unit relating to integrative processes.
The U.K. NVQ Levels 4 and 5 equate to the Australian AQF diploma and advanced
diploma. The standards have been written as 51 separate units of competence, each relat-
ing to a distinct functional area covering both strategic and operational project manage-
ment functions. Revision of the standards is claimed to incorporate content of the fourth
edition of the APM Body of Knowledge (Dixon, 2000). Definition of terms within the
document is taken from the Guide to Project Management: British Standards BS6079.
Each of the two qualifications based on the standard (Levels 4 and 5) consists of a total of
20 units that must be completed, of which 11 are mandatory and 9 can be drawn from a
selection of options. This allows for variation in the context (range indicators) in which
the profession/occupation is performed.
National Certificate in Generic Project Management
(Project Administration and Coordination) at NQF
Level 4 (PMSGB/SAQA), South Africa
The South African NQF Level 4 standards are the first set of performance-based stan-
dards and associated qualifications to be produced for project management in South Africa,
and work is proceeding on development of standards at other levels. The NQF Level 4 stan-
dards are at approximately the same level as the Australian AQF Certificate IV.
