CHAPTER 7
How to Do Lean—The Four
Strategies to Becoming
Lean
n this chapter, we will cover in simple format the four strategies to make a value
stream lean. In support of the strategies, we will detail the diagnostic and analytical
Itools used to reduce the seven wastes. We will cover the takt calculation, the time
study, the balancing analysis, the spaghetti diagram, and value stream mapping. I have
attached five appendices to this chapter, one to cover each technique.
Overview of the Lean Implementation Strategies
The Overall Lean Approach
The overall approach to make a value stream lean consists of four key strategies.
They are:
1. Synchronize supply to the customer, externally.
2. Synchronize production, internally.
3. Create flow.
4. Establish pull-demand systems.
The Diagnostic and Analytical Tools
To apply the four strategies, there are five basic diagnostic tools you will need to use in
evaluating a value stream. They are:
1. The takt calculation (see Appendix A)
2. The basic time study (see Appendix B)
3. Balancing analysis (see Appendix C)
4. A spaghetti diagram (see Appendix D)
5. The present state value stream map and the future state value stream map
(see Appendix E)
