4.7.3 Advanced Oxidation Process as a Buffer for Biological
Treatment
A single biorefractory wastewater stream can destabilize the entire treat-
ment process for days. It can be stated that 80% of wastewater treatment
issues are due to 20% of wastewater streams. Present technologies are unable
to address such streams separately. A rethinking concerning the form of
application (see Figures 4.17 and 4.18) and using the following aspects
can be highly useful.
• Several AOPs can be combined for treatment of each specific stream.
• AOPs can be installed at the point of wastewater generation.
• Stream-specific AOPs can improve the performance of biological treat-
ment systems.
