Advanced Treatment Technology and Strategy 213

introduction of new products into the waste stream. Thus there is an urgent
need for R & D in advanced oxidation processes, possibly in the direction of:
              • Pilot plant studies and design of new systems.
              • Preparation of database of successful AOP cases at lab, pilot, and
                 plant level.
              • Identification of heterogeneous catalysts that can address the issue of
                 sludge generation.
              • Combining AOP and conventional treatment process such as biological.
              • Investment in model AOP systems and plants that can be replicated.
              • Use of modern reaction engineering technologies for more efficient and
                 effective AOP reactors and systems.
