Examples of Learning and Development
Learning and development activities come in a variety of formats, including
the following:
1. On-the-job coaching from a manager or senior coworker who is a mas-
ter or mentor (This is sometimes most useful in a just-in-time mode.)
2. Job rotation into a job where a new skill must be learned and practiced
3. Project teams and special assignments that help the employee apply new
skills and knowledge
4. Replacement assignments during vacations, illnesses, and so on
5. Lateral transfers to practice different skill sets
6. University executive education programs
7. Functional-technical skills training
8. Management or leadership training
9. Opportunities to make presentations that require research
or analysis
10. Attendance and involvement in department, division, and
staff meetings
11. Serving as leader-teacher, instructor, conference leader, or trainer
12. Coaching from specialists in the organization
13. Self-study of bulletins, reports, and printed material
14. Attendance at selected conferences, symposia, and workshops
15. Participation in meetings of professional and technical societies
16. Personal coaching
17. University course attendance, study groups, and in-house courses
18. Operating responsibility for a new function or task to practice
