5. Every strength can be overused, and most frequently this occurs during
periods of stress, pressure, and anxiety. There are many times during the
first year of a leader’s new role when stress, pressure, and anxiety are
present, and sometimes they can be dominating feelings.
6. Overused strengths are almost always personal blind spots. Others usu-
ally experience the symptoms of the overused strengths well before the
leaders themselves do.
7. Awareness and “early warning systems” are mitigating factors. Under-
standing the overused strengths concept is essential to preventing prob-
lems. Overused strengths are potential career derailing factors. This
behavioral pattern is a dangerous one because it is like an insidious dis-
ease. It can be a quiet killer. Once aware, the leader can be sensitive to
the likely situations in which his or her strengths might be overused and
how people react when they are.
