                   BEGINNING TO CRAFT YOUR
                      VISION AND DIRECTION

The best way to predict the future is to create it.
                                               —Peter Drucker
If you have an important point to make, don’t try to be subtle or
clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and
hit it again. Then hit it a third time—a tremendous whack.
                                               —Winston Churchill

Creating a “fire in your belly” mental picture of what your organization
is capable of becoming and its reason for being is essential for you and
your people. You will need to accomplish the following:

            ■ Understand and help others understand the concepts of organiza-
tional vision, mission, and values. The current synonym for the
term mission is “purpose” or the phrase “organizational purpose.”
            ■ Develop your vision, mission, and set of organizational values for
              the organization.
            ■ Skillfully involve others in helping you create and carry out the
              organization’s vision, purpose, and values.
            ■ Be able to communicate enthusiastically your organization’s
              vision, purpose, and values.
            ■ Become a role model of your organization’s vision, purpose, and
values through consistent and reinforcing actions.

In this chapter, there is useful information about the following:
            ■ The concepts of organizational vision, mission, and values
            ■ Seeding your vision, mission, and values into your organization
