and executive assistants! Try unleashing their potency on several
            important problems.)
         ■ Are there work assignments, special projects, and task forces that can be
organized around your goals and that can further strengthen the direc-
            tion of your unit?
         ■ How can you make sure that you are effectively communicating your
early priorities downward, upward, and across the organization?

The lesson is clear. Acting consistently on your stated positions, priorities,
and values is a prerequisite for establishing acceptance of you and your vision.

Quick Reminders to Keep You on Track

         ■ Vision, purpose, and direction are what results when, together, people
look outside themselves, put aside individual interests, and capture a
common notion of what they want their organization to achieve.
         ■ A committed vision, purpose, and values together can serve as an orga-
nizational GPS. They can serve as a directional compass for your team
or organization. People in high-achieving organizations have their heart
            and soul in their vision.
         ■ Another key to success is involving your people in developing ways to
achieve the vision and purpose you are seeding.
         ■ There are important ways to seed your personal points of view into your
organization, including the following three principles:
            1. People must believe that their commitment to building a strong
organization will simultaneously result in benefits to the organization
              and to themselves.
            2. You must keep driving toward the initial identification and subse-
              quent achievement of the vision.
            3. Keep top management commitment visible.
         ■ Be a catalyst, a facilitator, and a model. Orchestrate the group’s quest for
            vision and purpose.
         ■ Clearly identify, model, and manage the key planks in your leadership
platform. Use symbolic behavior and language (managing vocabulary) to
            communicate your vision clearly.
         ■ Acting consistently—that is, having your actions match your intent and
words—is the key to developing good public relations for your positions.
