294 Just Promoted!
S Specific: The objective should be to the point and should be behavioral
in nature.
M Measurable: You should be able to observe clearly when the objective is
achieved.
A Attainable: The objective should be possible to attain. Stretch yourself. A
good guideline is “just out of reach but not out of sight.”
R Results oriented: The objective is truly worth taking on; it is of value to
you.
T Time bound: There should be a clearly identified time element involved.
Goals and objectives without a tight time standard generally become
unfulfilled wishes.
Personal objectives generally can be written in one sentence, two at the
most. For example:
By June 1 of this year, I am going to leave the office by 6 p.m. every day.
Beginning this spring season, I am going to be the assistant coach for Steve’s
baseball team and miss no more than one practice every two weeks and
no more than two games the entire season.
By December 1 of this year, my spouse and I will take a one-week vacation
together without business calls, briefcases, or the children.
I will be home for dinner with the family every day that I am not out
of town.
Write your personal work and life integration objectives here (remember,
two at the most):
1. _____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
2. _____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
Step 3. Identify what keeps you from doing this now (barriers), and write
down how you are going to overcome these barriers (enablers). What might
help you to achieve your objective (for example, people, commitment, money,
creative approach, or information)?
