Be honest with yourself. Is this goal a “should” or a “want”? Do you feel
you should (ought to) do it, or is it really an important value to you (want to)?
Check one of the following three categories of personal motivation:
High motivation: I am determined to achieve this objective,
no matter what.
Medium motivation: I’ll do better, and I’ll do the best I can.
Low motivation: It is something I think I should do, but my
feelings aren’t really there.
Go back to your barriers, and, after reflection, answer four more questions:
Who can help and support my efforts?
What other factors or resources could help me?
Can I mobilize myself? What are my next immediate steps?
What additional actions will I take to help myself?
Step 4. Write a contract with yourself to help strengthen your commitment and
resolve. It can usually be written in one or two paragraphs. In its shortest form,
it is a restatement of the personal change objective that you wrote in step 1.
Address the contract to yourself, and indicate the date that you write it at
the top. Be sure to be specific in terms of what and how you wish to change
