              incremental volumetric strain is equal to the incremental vertical strain Δe z . This view is
              very important in that it relates the change of a physical parameter (air void content) to
              the mechanical parameter of volumetric strain and 1D strain, which allows researchers
              to further associate it to dissipated strain energy, constitutive modeling, and field com-
              paction on the basis of rigorous mechanics principles.
