is H, the height at which the ray intersects the (paraxial) image plane. The abscissa is
tan U, the final slope of the ray with respect to the optical axis. Note that it is conven-
tional to plot the ray through the top of the lens at the right of the figure, and that
curves for image points above the axis are customarily shown.
