32. Answer questions with complete sentences and with
substance.
Avoid simple “yes” or “720” answers. Remember, the interviewer is
looking for indicators of substance and benefits. Brief answers
give little information about you. They may indicate a lack of
interest or substance on your part. The interviewer should leave this
interview saying “Xfeel good about this person. He gave good answers to
my questions. ” If you don’t answer the questions completely, how can
this person feel good about you?
33. Reduce your nervousness by practicing a few stress
reduction techniques.
YOU can better control your ner- ~f you are nervous,
vousness by following the same
advice often given to public you are probably
speakers. As you walk into the focusing too much
interview room, try to take slow attention on
deep breaths. You can do this
subtly so the interviewer will be yourself.
unaware of it. And although this
is easier said than done, the more you can get your mind off
yourself and concentrate on the other person, the more comfortable
you will feel. If you are nervous, you are probably focusing too
much attention on yourself. You are self-consciously concerned with
how you are doing and what impression you are making on others.
Try to be more other-directed. Rather than concentrate on your
needs and fears, concern yourself with the employer’s needs and
questions. Preparation is probably the greatest aid in lessening
nervousness. If you followed Principles 1-20 and arrived on time
(Principle 2 1 ), you should walk into the interview feeling well
prepared and confident. If you arrive early for the interview, you
will have a chance to collect your thoughts, tale those deep breaths,
and focus your attention toward the employer.
