When the individual BOMs defining a product are linked together graphically, as in
Figure 6-4, they form a hierarchical, pyramid-like structure, and the levels come into
view. By convention the levels are numbered from top to bottom, beginning with level 0
for the end product. The structure may be likened to a Christmas tree, and vertical lines
of progression (such as X-A-B-C-D-E in Figure 6-5) are called branches. The items on the
highest level in a product-structure file are termed end items.
