Acknowledge what came out of it and explain why you’re
            dropping it. Then move on.


          Motivational Phrases
          As always, say only what is true. This can be a tricky situation
          if corporate policy restricts what you can tell people. Use the
          following phrases if they apply.

          ■  “We need your help through this tough time. If you can hang
            in with us, when we get back on track and our numbers are
            better, we’ll all benefit.”
          ■  “I know change is difficult. If you have any questions during
            the transition, please feel free to ask me (or     ).”
          ■  “I know how much you value everyone in your department.
            You’ve built a great team. Whomever you decide to let go will
            be a loss for us all.”
          ■  “We’re doing everything we can to reduce your stress during
            the acquisition process. Additional suggestions are welcome.”
          ■  “We’ll all miss Karthik. He was our top performer and a great
            guy. As we restructure, the field is wide open for new top
            performers. I hope you’ll all join me in looking to the future.”
          ■  “Please disregard the conflicting rumors about why Ari left the
            company. Of course, the rumor mill is not the most reliable
            place to get information. I’m sure Ari shared the reasons at his
            own discretion.”
          ■  “We’ve gone through a lot of changes. Change can cause
            stress, but it can also bring opportunities.”
          ■  “I would like your input on our new direction.”
          ■  “The layoffs will not affect your job.”
          ■  “I’ve always been honest with you and will continue to be.
            Clearly, we’ll have some staff reassignments. That’s not always
            a bad thing. I’ll share what I learn as soon as I can.”
          ■  “I’ve talked with senior management about the crowded
            working conditions during the renovation. Unfortunately, so
