          ■  Expect mature, rational responses. What you expect is often
            what you get.
          ■  Avoid the urge to be a cliché dispenser. Sayings like “Buck up,”
            and “It’s always darkest before the dawn,” won’t help anyone.
          ■  Be as honest as you can about why firing or layoff decisions
            were made.
