■ “Please” and “Thank you.”
■ “Even great ball players don’t hit home runs every time, but
their fans continue to believe in them. You did your best, and I
believe in you.”
■ “I know I promised to make time for that
(meeting, presentation, discussion . . .) on Friday, but I have to
deal with a problem that just came to my attention. Can we
reschedule for Monday morning? How is 10:00 A.M.?”
■ “It’s clear that we don’t see eye to eye on this issue, but I
respect your point of view.”
■ “I have faith in your abilities.”
■ “I don’t know the answer to that question. Let me find out for
you.”
■ “Our policies are designed to protect your rights.”
■ “You must have been upset by that comment. I’ll talk with Jack
immediately.”
■ “Harassment is unacceptable.” (Also any other reprimand for
not showing respect to others and any action that makes
employees who’ve been victims of persecution or harassment
know that they are in a safe, respectful environment.)

office.”
