you have been learning and ideally generated by employees, as well
as using sayings from well-known people.
5 Large flowcharts for new projects or change management programs, and
encouraging employees to add their comments using sticky labels,
                                  Blu-tac™, or magnetic strips.

There is a well-known group of sayings that apply some of these
principles about memory in an instantly useful way:

                                                     You remember:
90% of what you read, hear, see,
                                                         say, and do

                                             60% of what you do

                                          50% of what you say

                                        40% of what you see
                                    30% of what you hear

                                  20% of what you read

Of course, the percentages may only be roughly right. And as you
get higher up the scale, you are really describing experiential learn-
ing in which you are fully involved. Nevertheless, they are strongly
                                  indicative of an important trend.

What implications does this information have for you at work? How often do you create
opportunities for those you work with to engage their senses when learning?

                            MEMORY PEGS

You have already seen, in the chart on pages 121–2, a few of the
ways in which the four key principles of memory can affect your life
at work. In this section we will look in a little more detail at how
you can apply these and other principles.
