but guarantees their performance. In some cases, the catalyst is only "rented"
and is returned when used. All operations are supervised to some degree
by representatives of the vendor. Very little information is revealed and the
user is restricted not to make any tests or analyses other than those prescribed
            for operations.

            6.10.2. Partly Restricted

The process licensor specifies the initial charge of catalyst, with or
without restriction on information, but the user may select subsequent
            loadings from competing producers.

           6.10.3. Open Market

The user may select from a wide range of catalysts available from many
manufacturers. Legal restrictions vary from one case to another.

           6.10.4. Developmental

Manufacturers often have semicommercial batches of catalysts avail-
able for testing. Negotiation and secrecy agreements are usually required.

           6.11. SOME FINAL THOUGHTS

There is no doubt that catalyst preparation is the secret to achieving
the desired activity, selectivity, and lifetime. Catalyst manufacturing, in
turn, is the key to commercial utilization and profit. Raney's modern
alchemist now has many sophisticated tools to aid him, yet diligence,
perseverance, and perhaps luck, are still necessary. Let those who tread this
path take warning and ensure that all parts of the puzzle fit and are properly
           recorded.
