ANSWERING QUESTIONS WITH OUTSTANDING BENEFITS

                   [benefit].”
Stop, smile, and pause for a response. If the interviewer is
silent, you might add, “Have I addressed your concerns, or
should I continue with more specifics?”

                            SALARY CONVERSATIONS
                          THAT GIVE YOU INFORMATION

Many interview guides tell you not to discuss salary during
the first interview, but you may not have a choice. Job appli-
cations frequently ask your current salary and preferred salary
range. Gatekeepers—such as human resources representatives
and headhunters—often will ask for your current salary as a
condition of continuing on in the interview process.
What should you do if the interviewer asks your salary?
If you simply answer with the dollar amount, you are
               nowhere. You don’t know

❏ The salary range for the position

❏ Whether you are within that range, above it, or below it

❏ What role benefits play in the total compensation pack-
                   age

You may say: “My salary is $60,000 plus benefits. I assume
that this is within the salary range for this job?”
If the answer is: “Our range for this job is $45,000 to
               $55,000,” you might respond with

“I assume that there is some flexibility.”
