TO THE TOP
ontacts, referrals, and references are the lifeblood of any
Cjob search. It’s up to you to build and maintain an effec-
tive network of contacts. The more people who know about
your job search, the better.
Who are your contacts? The simple answer is that anyone
can be a contact. Obviously, mentors, supervisors, and teach-
ers are important contacts, but don’t limit yourself to the obvi-
ous. Your sister’s roommate, your dentist’s brother-in-law,
or your father’s golf buddy are all potential contacts. The key
is to tell people you are looking for a job. Sometimes this
requires discretion, but the more people who know what you
