6 - PROJECT TIME MANAGEMENT

For adaptive software projects, the schedule can be compressed by reducing the number of features planned
during an iterative cycle to those that can be delivered with the given number of team members in the planned
time frame. Another method for compressing the schedule is to limit the level of functionality within features to a
                   minimally viable subset.

                   6.6.2.9 Incremental Product Planning

Managers of software projects often schedule development of features and quality attributes (the product
scope) as deliverable increments of software. This approach can be used for the construction phase of a predictive
life cycle and for the iterative development cycles of an adaptive life cycle. The project schedule is ordered by the
priority of incremental product development cycles that are typically weekly, monthly, or quarterly. The scheduling
sequence for increments of working, deliverable software can be reviewed and revised during periodic incremental
                   product planning meetings.

For adaptive life cycles, the project manager and the project team plan the work activities for the next incremental
delivery cycle in enough detail to accomplish the work, typically making adjustments based on daily reviews as the
work is accomplished. Using this method of incremental product planning, the anticipated unknowns may indicate
that the selected increments are too large for delivery within scheduled development cycles. When this occurs,
the team partitions the increments to be delivered into what can be delivered, which requires an adjustment in the
prioritization of work activities and the product backlog.
