Most of the material in Section 11 of the PMBOK Guide is directly applicable to managing risk for predictive life

cycle software projects; therefore, this section of the Software Extension focuses primarily on risk management for
adaptive life cycle software projects.

The following considerations are also applicable. Software risk planning occurs repeatedly, beginning with
an initial formal or informal risk-benefit analysis and a decision to initiate or not initiate the project. For large,
formal software projects, projects in regulated environments, and projects involving safety-critical software, a
documented risk management plan is essential. Most projects have less formal risk management procedures or
follow an overall enterprise risk management plan. While all team members should be responsible for identifying
