11.2.1.14 Risk Taxonomies
While every software project manager and team needs to identify risk factors, it is helpful to be aware of the
more common types of risks for software projects. The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) has published several
three-level risk taxonomies, notably for operational risk and development project risk. These taxonomies break
down risks by class, for example, program constraints, product engineering, and development environment; then
by element, such as requirements within product engineering; and then by attribute, such as stability or formality
of requirements. Table 11-1 is a simple first-level risk breakdown structure, with examples of common software
project risks.
