spectrometer system. As a result, the separation was monitored by both the FID and the FTIR
spectrometer simultaneously. The Cryolet transfer line was maintained at 250°C and the tip was
positioned about 0.1 mm from the gold cryo-collector disk. The sample was normally diluted in n-
hexane 1:10, and about 0. 2 µl was injected onto the pre-column using a split ratio of 1:10. The system
dscribed by Ragunathan et al. is obviously complex and expensive but would provide reliable data from
very small samples and relatively quickly.
Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) Coupled with GC/IR and GC/MS
The thermogravimetric analyzer, coupled with GC/IR and GC/MS, is another fairly complex combined
instrument and might be considered as TGA coupled with two tandem systems, or even as a quintuplet
system. The combination was assembled by McClennen et al. [7] who used it to study the thermal
decomposition of a number of different polymers. A block diagram of their apparatus is shown in
Figure 4.19.
