Light from the xenon source is focused onto an excitation grating which is movable to enable the
wavelength of the excitation light to be selected. Light of the selected wavelength passes through a slit
and is focused on the liquid chromatography flow cell. Light emitted at right angles to the excitation
light is focused through a slit onto the emission grating and then through a third slit onto the
photomultiplier. The emission grating is also movable, to enable the wavelength of the emission light to
be selected or the fluorescence spectrum to be scanned. Between the second slit and the emission
grating, there is a cut-off filter that prevents interference from stray light.
