Overall, it appears that pleasant, natural aromas increase efficiency and encourage
more risk taking. They also cause people to negotiate more amiably, form more chal-
lenging goals, and behave less combatively. 28

Adding Aromas to Training
o help stimulate the learning environment, experiment with different aromas.
TTry using plug-in air freshener fragrances (these plug directly into an electrical
socket and gradually dispense aromas into the air). Choose some of the aromas
mentioned in this section (e.g., sandalwood, floral, or lavender scents). Ask for
feedback on the smells and flavors and explain the research behind their use.
Also ask for additional aroma suggestions that participants believe stimulate and
enhance brain functioning.
For additional information on the impact of various aromas, search the Internet
under the term Aromatherapy.
Hydration
Medical authorities encourage the average adult to drink 8–15 glasses of water per day.
This helps keep the body temperature regulated, aids bodily functions, and keeps the
brain, which is estimated to be 90 percent water, well saturated.
When planning your sessions, always put a pitcher of water and glasses on partici-
pant tables and in the rear of the room along with other refreshments. Encourage your
learners to drink water throughout the day. In addition, you may want to provide a
variety of beverages such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, and juices so that learners have a
choice based on preference and personal need. Remember that some people have spe-
cial dietary needs with which you must comply for legal reasons in certain situations.
Dehydration can lead to your own reduced physical and mental performance as well.
Keep plenty of water on hand as your facilitate and pause to drink regularly. Water is
better than drinks containing caffeine (e.g., coffee, tea, or soft drinks), as such drinks
can cause irritation and hyperactivity. Also, carbonated beverages can cause embar-
rassing stomach gas that might escape unexpectedly as you speak.
Food and Refreshments
There is scientific proof to substantiate the saying “Breakfast is the most important meal
of the day.” Starting in childhood, many people are taught the importance of eating a
balanced diet made up of the major food groups. They are also often warned of the
results of using or abusing drugs, alcohol, and caffeine. Even so, these early lessons are
often overlooked or ignored when trainers plan their sessions.
