criterion. Encourage learners to put the dates and action steps into their calendar or
event planner or on a wall in their work area to make it visible.
Issue a Call to Action
Following development of an action plan, give learners a call to action. Stress that they
now have implementation goals for what was learned; however, they should now take
steps to put their plan in action. Encourage them to think of who they can get to help
implement and support their action plan.
Allow Time for Feedback
Build in time to receive some sort of feedback (e.g., session evaluation form or activity
shapes on the wall) from learners. Get their perceptions on specific things that worked
and did not work during the session. Also, do not lose sight of the fact that your learners
are customers and, were it not for them, you would not have a job.
If you did a good job communicating and holding interim reviews throughout the
session, many questions will already have been answered. You may still want to allow
one more opportunity for learner questions and clarification of misunderstandings.
Give “Thank You” Time
Take the time to say “thank you” to participants for their participation and attention.
You can also include an opportunity for learners to thank one another for support and
contributions. In some of my sessions, I use a series of seven transparencies with the
following on them:
T
H
A
N
K
S
THANKS
I use these transparencies to get the participation of all learners. First I ask everyone
to read along in unison in a loud voice as I project the images on the screen. Starting
with the “T” I go through all seven transparencies. Once the last one is viewed and read,
I reply, “Thank you for being a wonderful group and for your great ideas!” I then have
all participants give a loud round of applause for themselves.
