to certain individuals for specific LEED items, there is also a need for special material and
construction requirements to be included in the detailed design package and the
construction documents and given to both the contractors and the procurement agents.
Some example items are recycle content requirements, waste management needs, regional
procurement goals, product content requirements with respect to indoor environmental
quality, and energy efficiency goals. This should include a review of the construction
documents to ensure that each credit is adequately addressed prior to bidding,
procurement, and construction.
Summary of Project Objectives
EA prerequisite 1, Fundamental Commissioning of the Building Energy Systems,
includes documentation of the Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR) and the Basis of
Design (BOD). These documents should include not only information useful for energy
system design and efficiency, but also items that can be used to direct the incorporation
of other sustainable features into the project. A listing of overall project objectives should
be made available to all project participants and updated regularly. Some of the items
might include the following:
• Occupancies, both regular and transient and subdivided by gender, age, and other
special categorization that may impact project design. For instance, a high school
building and a kindergarten school building will have different bicycle rack needs
for the same number of students. A nursing home and an apartment building will
have different access and water needs. Occupancies determine many of the needs
for sustainable site, water, energy, and room or furniture requirements.
• Transportation and areal access needs including parking and expected trip
generation.
• Interior space needs.
• Exterior space objectives.
• Hours and frequencies of operation.
• Maintenance needs.
• Special needs including
- Security
- Special chemical use or storage needs
- Special facilities such as laboratories or examination rooms
This list is in no way complete, but can aid in asking initial questions of the owner or
decision makers so that design and construction can proceed in a more efficient and
sustainable manner.
8.2 Summary of Relevant Codes and Credits
Summary of Relevant Codes
The LEED-NC 2009 rating system and Reference Guide list many codes, standards, and
other guidances that are used in the various prerequisite and credit determinations.
Table 8.2.1 lists many of these by prerequisite or credit as a summary tool for obtaining
any supplemental information needed to aid in the project execution.
