The parking spaces at Abercorn Common are different than ordinary park-
ing spaces. These parking spaces are made from porous concrete instead of
regular concrete. Porous concrete is special because when it rains the water
that hits the concrete dissolves instead of making a puddle. —William
The coolest thing is they built the first environmentally friendly McDonald’s
in the world! They also have these lanterns that use 27 watts that shine like
a 100 watt light bulb. —Jacob
The old building rubble was either recycled or used to build certain parts of
                              the complex. —Sales
When they tore it down they crushed the rock. The used the rock on things
so they didn’t need to buy them. The rest they gave to people who would re-
                              cycle the materials. —Alex
They also made the roofs white so the heat would reflect off the roof and
not make the building hot. If you have a black roof, the heat would go in-
side the building. It would cause people who own the building to turn the
air conditioner on and waste energy. —Erika
I think that the field trip to Abercorn Common was the most interesting
field trip I’ve been on. The rainwater on the roofs of those buildings gets
pumped into a cistern behind the buildings. It is then used to power the
fountain instead of using the city water. —Lindsay
