Acknowledgments
Any time you write a book that is equal parts research, construction, writ-
ing, and tech editing, you know you have a long and arduous road ahead.
Trust us: there’s a special place in hell for anyone who says, “Turn a Palm
into a robot? Then write a book about it? How hard could that be?” That
said, the stellar folks at McGraw-Hill/Osborne made it as painless as pos-
sible, and we thank them heartily for that. We’d like to thank Margie,
Monika, and Tana from the bottom of our hearts for keeping this book on
track and making it look as good as it does.
We also want to thank the Manipulation Lab, of the Robotics Institute at
Carnegie Mellon University, for the original vision, design, and construc-
tion of the Palm Pilot Robot Kit. Thanks to the folks at Acroname who took
the next step in creating a Palm Pilot Robot suitable for hobbyists. Special
thanks to Steve at Acroname for the help he provided in understanding
some of the idiosyncrasies of the robot. Finally, thanks to all the hobbyists
and programmers who let us use their software in this book.
