122 The Ultimate Palm Robot
you’re a real hacker, and you want to write the code yourself, we offer two
things: The PRP can create source code in several different languages. At the
end of the chapter we’ll show you how to create a plug-in to the PRP so that it
can create source code in any language of your choosing. Second, later chap-
ters in this book show you how to use your programming skills to create pro-
grams for the Palm Pilot Robot Kit (PPRK) using Basic, C, TEA, and Java.
Installing the Palm Robot Programmer
We think you’ll find the installation process pretty painless. The installer is
located on the CD-ROM in the folder\Palm Robot Programmer. If you’re
using Windows, you’ll find the installer in \Palm Robot Programmer\
Windows\VM\or\PalmRobotProgrammer\Windows\NOVM\;theinstaller
is named PRP_install.exe. For Mac OS X users, look for \Palm Robot Pro-
grammer\MacOSX; the installer is named PRP_install.zip. Last, but not least,
we haven’t forgotten about you Linux folks. Your installer is in the directory\
Palm Robot Programmer\Linux\VM or \Palm Robot Programmer\
Linux\NOVM; the installer is called PRP_Install.bin.
You may have noticed that the Windows and Linux directories listed in the
previous paragraph have a VM and NOVM subdirectory. Because the PRP ap-
plication is written using Java, you must have Java Runtime Environment
version 1.4 or later installed on your computer.
❏ If you don’t already have a Java environment, you’ll want to use
the version of the installer in the VM directory of the CD-ROM.
VM stands for virtual machine, and it refers to whether the installer
has the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) with it (not whether your
computer has the JVM).
❏ If you know that you do have the Java 1.4 runtime already on
your computer, you can use the installer that does not come with
its own VM; you will find that installer in the NOVM directory.
(NOVM means the installer does not have the JVM.)
❏ If you don’t know whether or not you have Java on your
computer, we recommend trying the NOVM installer first;
most computers already have Java, so this option will work
for most people.
❏ If you use the NOVM installer and the program doesn’t work,
you’ll need to use the VM installer.
❏ If you’re a Mac OS X user, you can get a Java 1.4 version from
www.apple.com/java.
