Chapter 1 Meeting the Palm Robot 13
The Pilot 1000 and Pilot 5000
The very first Palm OS devices, released in 1996, were the Pilot 1000 and
Pilot 5000 (see Figure 1-2). If you had one of these devices, you had either
128KB (the Pilot 1000) or 512KB (the Pilot 5000) of memory. These devices in-
cluded early versions of the Palm Address Book and Date Book, a To Do list,
and a Memo Pad. You might be able to find one of these around, and you may
even be able to use it with the PPRK, but since the first PPRK used a later Palm
model, we won’t talk much more about these.

PalmPilot Personal/Professional
The PalmPilot Personal and the PalmPilot Professional, shown in Figure 1-3,
were released in 1997. The Personal featured 512KB of memory, and the Pro-
fessional had a whopping 1MB of memory. Even more useful, though, is that
both introduced backlighting, which made them usable in low light situa-
tions. The other important feature introduced by the Professional was a mail
application. Initially, you had to download mail to your PC first, and then
transfer it to your PDA during a HotSync. Later, Palm offered a modem that
let you connect to the email server and download directly to the PDA.
