             Less expensive than a phone call

             Faster than regular mail and “phone tag”
             More to-the-point messages than when pleas-
             antries exchanged otherwise


           Reasons/Situations for Formal Memos,
           Letters, or Reports

             Strong image with customer/partner
             Perceived as protocol in some situations (com-
             pany introduction)
             More formal announcements (new product
             launches, price increases, reporting data)
