Individual Insincerities
Flattery makes it difficult to enjoy the real commendations
that come our way. When introduced to someone senior
in an organization, a common comment that rolls off the
tongue is “You’re a real role model.” Have you ever had oc-
casion to hear that executive respond with “Oh? In what
way?” The flatterer tap dances trying to compose some-
thing sensible since he could write all he knows of the per-
son on his thumbnail.
Such insincere comments are all part of the spin, spam,
and smiles that make civility possible—but create a crisis
of trust personally.
Management Clichés That Skirt the Truth
Several times a year, I address audiences of HR profes-
sionals. During those programs, attendees have the op-
portunity to share (anonymously, of course) untruths told
in their organizations—those that they can verify because
of their being privy to confidential information and con-
versations with senior executives. Here are the backsto-
ries—mentioned most often:
“No one is going to lose their job when the merger
happens.” (Reality: Plans are already under way to lay
off redundant departments.)
“No one is getting a raise this year.” (Reality: Senior
executives are getting huge bonuses.)
“We are all doing our part to cut expenses this year.”
(Reality: Offsite meetings, travel, bonuses, and perks
for lower-ranking people are eliminated; no such
changes are made for top executives.)
