roof of this shell should support a load of 300 pounds per square foot. Safety lights are
hung under the planking so pedestrians can see where they are walking. At truck gates
(that intersect the pedestrian walkway) strobe lights are placed at the intersections
so that pedestrians will know when a truck is pulling in or out of the loading dock. In
addition, a flag person is assigned to stop pedestrian traffic. The bridge should extend
50 feet beyond the limits of the site under construction.
At areas where workers will be loading or unloading material at the hoist, a bridge has
to be provided to protect the workers. The bridge should support a load of 300 pounds
per square foot and should extend at least 30 feet out from the hoist structure. It is best
to check with the local jurisdiction to determine their requirements.
In some areas, on the first floor it may be necessary to enclose a linear portion of the
space. In this instance, a shed is provided. The shed is used to help keep out the public
and minimize the infiltration of adverse weather elements. The shed is usually con-
structed of plywood.
SECURITY
Security of the total site is of extreme importance to the owner and workers. The owner
does not want unauthorized personnel walking around the site. This could create a lia-
bility problem if someone is injured on the site and is not authorized to be there in the
first place. In addition, expensive tools, equipment, and components have to be pro-
tected from theft. Therefore, a protective fence should be installed to protect the site
from unauthorized entry and to minimize potential theft. The fence is usually made of
