should quickly be removed from facility grounds. Attractive signs are to be posted at the entrance
(Figure 7.41).
Odors of decomposing wastes will fill the MRF and will readily migrate beyond the facility
boundaries if proper precautions are not taken. Rodents and insects may be a problem. Spontaneous
combustion can occur in MSW piles. A rule of thumb is that 2 days of storage is a safe maximum,
with a week being dangerous (Vesilind et al., 2002). A waste fire is difficult to extinguish and the
newly formed wet wastes produced after extinguishing pose new disposal problems.
